How long do I need to wait before I seal my stone or pavers?

We recommend that you should wait 6 months before sealing your stone or pavers. The stone or pavers needs time to fully cure. During this time efflorescence (salts) found in concrete rises to the surface which creates a white haze on top of the pavers. By waiting the recommended 6 months, the efflorescence will rise so you are not sealing it into the pavers.
Before sealing your pavers or natural stone you should thoroughly clean them. For pavers you will need to use an efflorescence cleaner and for natural stone you will need a hardscape cleaner. For more information on sealing your pavers or hardscapes contact us or visit techniseal.

What is the difference between manufactured stone and natural stone?

Manufactured stone is a man made material constructed from concrete. Natural Stone comes from the earth. Manufactured stone is lighter than natural stone. When trying to match an existing area of your home or if weight is an issue then manufactured stone may be best. Natural stone is heavier and harder to work with. Since natural stone comes from the earth we cannot control the color variance that is often found with natural stones. However, the beauty and character that comes from natural stone is like no other.

How much sq ft does a ton of stone cover?

The coverage amount that you get from a ton of stone varies based on the application that will be used. If you are using flagstone for a patio then you get approximately 120 sq ft per ton using flagstone.

When constructing a dry stack wall using thin stone, a good rule of thumb for estimating the amount of coverage is that one ton will construct a wall that is 1’ high x 1’ wide and 14’ long. When applying a mosaic veneered finish you can get approximately 100 sq ft per ton.
If you would like more information on how much stone it will take to do your project please contact us for an estimate.

How do I calculate how much base material I need for my patio?

Your patio is only as good as the base that is underneath. We recommend a 4” compacted base of crusher run that has been compacted every 2” and a 1” base of screenings used for leveling. Make certain that you use a hand tamp or powered compacter to compact your base at least every 2”. If you are unsure of how much materials you will need be sure to check out our material calculator.
